It takes time to build a well stocked and healthy aquarium.
 Fish waste contains both ammonia and nitrites, these can build up and kill fish quickly.
 It is essential to give the bacteria enough time to establish themselves before adding lots of fish.
 Test the water for nitrites and ammonia.
 Remember this spike in waste will occur every time you add new fish.


Size

It is essential to avoid overstocking your tropical fish tank.
 If your tank is overcrowded, the natural tank bacteria will be unable to effectively break down the fish waste.
 Another danger of overstocking your tank is insufficient oxygen.
 The larger the tank, the more water to absorb oxygen.
 This means if you have a twenty gallon tank, you can have roughly twenty inches of fish.
 It is important to consider both the species and aggressiveness of the fish.
 Aggressive species are often beautiful but before adding them to an aquarium make sure that they will get along with the other fish.
 Selecting mostly docile fish will help keep your aquarium peaceful.
 This not only adds additional visual appeal to your tank but gives the less aggressive fish a place to seek shelter if attacked.

 At the beach they can be much more of a nuisance than mosquitoes.
 Once you are bitten by a sand fly and start scratching the bite you will end up with a large red welt on your skin that stays for days and is uncomfortable and rather ugly.
 Make sure you use that bitter smelling, syrupy yellow liquid that seeps out of the freshly cut aloe leaf along with the aloe itself because the yellow stuff has strong healing properties.
 You may have to ask somebody local if perhaps they might have some in their garden and could you maybe have a leaf.
 It may help a little.


SUNBLOCK

Bring plenty of high SPF sunblock.


WATER FILTER

No matter what people say, don't drink the water unless you are prepared to get sick while you are camping.

 Don't attempt to filter drinking water from a cistern unless you have proof that the cistern is very clean.
 This water can collect for days and become quite filthy if the cistern is not properly maintained.
 Even if you have to buy bottled water or boil all of your drinking water, it will be worth it to stay healthy.
 You can't assume that you will be able to build a fire to cook over.
 Plus, too many campfires burning at once in the campground can create air pollution.
 Make sure your stove uses common, easy to find size propane bottles.
 Don't forget a roll or two of med weight cord as well.
 You should anticipate and be prepared for rain even if is the dry season, and feel very lucky if you manage to avoid rain.


WIND BLOCKING JACKET AND PANTS

If you get a prolonged (try 3-4 days!) windstorm you will be miserable without some wind gear.
 Even a tropical beach can feel cold and exposed.

Mistake #1 - Adding one fish at a time - When adding new fish to your saltwater aquarium, it is often problematic to add just one fish at a time.
 And if you are adding just one fish, then all that aggression is focused on one fish.
 Another problem with only adding one fish at a time, particularly to a new tank, is that there are not that many fish in the tank, so they take much longer to learn acclimate to their new diet of flakes, pellets, frozen foods, etc.
 When you only have a couple of fish in a new tank, they are often stressed out and anxious because they do not have the safety in numbers benefit of being in a school.
 Instead, add new fish in groups.
 Social feeding response improves the speed at which new fish get used to eating the foods you offer.
 Some people get home from the store with a new fish and in they go.
 Depending on where your new fish is coming from, the acclimation method used may vary slightly, but the same basics will always apply.
 And if you do need to use a net, then use one with the finest mesh possible, so that it minimizes abrasion and harm to the fish.
 But when it comes time to move the fish from the bag into the acclimation bucket or from the acclimation bucket into the tank, there really is no need for a net.


Mistake #4 - Putting bag water into your aquarium - Most new fish come in a plastic bag, which contains the water from the fish store or the online retailer or wholesaler, or from your friends tank.
 This copper, if added to your reef tank, would kill your invertebrates (corals, snails, hermit crabs, starfish, etc.


Mistake #5 - Taking too long to get your new fish conditioned to feeding - Too often a new fish will get added to a tank with existing fish, and the feeding routine is not adjusted to account for the new fish.
 The problem with this is that, between the time they are collected and the time they are put into your tank, newly added fish have been through a lot of stress.
 This is a problem, because without proper nutrition, the stress I mentioned can easily result in a disease outbreak.


Solution: Get your new fish eating as quickly as possible by offering them small amounts of food several times a day for the first two weeks.
 At first, offer whatever they will eat.
 The goal is to just get them eating.
 Once they are eating regularly, you can then add more food items with higher nutritional value.
 Make sure there is not any uneaten food on the bottom.
