 If you want better fly fishing to improve your catch. (and who doesn’t) There are many things you can work on. But you’ve got to start somewhere, right? So let’s look at your casting technique. This is one of the most common reasons for a poor catch. Does your cast end up with the leader collapsing into a tangled heap, If this is the case, first check your back cast. It should unroll in a neat, tight loop and then fully straighten out, before you start on the forward cast. Also what length of leader should you be using? If you have plenty of space, a twelve foot leader is great for keeping your line well away from the fish, but only if you have the skills necessary to get it to turn over and straighten out. A 9 foot leader will be easier to cast and easier to present the fly to the fish, while still keeping the fly line a good distance away, and you can always extend it further with a long tippet, although again you may then have similar problems turning and straightening out. The longer and finer the tippet, the more bites you’ll get. But only if you are able to present the fly correctly. If space is too restricted for long casts, go down to a 7 ½ foot leader. This will help you keep more fly line in the air on the cast. Experiment with different leader and tippet lengths and above all, practice, practice, practice. Many beginner fly fishermen think that they’re not catching anything because they’re using the wrong fly, so they swap it for another and cast again, and then they do it again. The problem with this is: Each time you change flies, your leader gets shorter and the tippet becomes thicker as you move up the tapered line. As you get higher, threading the tippet through the eye of the fly hook becomes more difficult, and the fish is more likely to notice the tippet.

No matter what people say, don't drink the water unless you are prepared to get sick while you are camping.

 Another problem with only adding one fish at a time, particularly to a new tank, is that there are not that many fish in the tank, so they take much longer to learn acclimate to their new diet of flakes, pellets, frozen foods, etc.
 When you only have a couple of fish in a new tank, they are often stressed out and anxious because they do not have the safety in numbers benefit of being in a school.
 Instead, add new fish in groups.
 Social feeding response improves the speed at which new fish get used to eating the foods you offer.
 Some people get home from the store with a new fish and in they go.
 Depending on where your new fish is coming from, the acclimation method used may vary slightly, but the same basics will always apply.
 And if you do need to use a net, then use one with the finest mesh possible, so that it minimizes abrasion and harm to the fish.
 But when it comes time to move the fish from the bag into the acclimation bucket or from the acclimation bucket into the tank, there really is no need for a net.


Mistake #4 - Putting bag water into your aquarium - Most new fish come in a plastic bag, which contains the water from the fish store or the online retailer or wholesaler, or from your friends tank.

 Once they are eating regularly, you can then add more food items with higher nutritional value.
 Make sure there is not any uneaten food on the bottom.

"Tropical Fish Fun - The New Tank"," So we decided to reconstruct the fireplace - a typical modern affair with no real quality or style - into a 7 foot long 4 foot deep paradise for fish and eventually into an African Cichlid sanctuary.


The tank was to stand on ornamental stone blocks which a local builder fixed in place.


The first trip to the store

My excitement was extreme as we made our way to the local store to get the bits and pieces we would need to start off:

o the gravel

o the filter and aerator

o the lighting

o the heater

o the cleaner (gravel vac).
 At this time there was no need to be particular as water disturbs the gravel when it is first added.
 At this point I added some water purifiers and de-chlorinator to the tank.
 These all remained switched off until I was finished in the tank.


Next all the equipment was turned on and left for two days.


The first fish.
 Mollies, swordtails, platies or guppys are ideal to get your water up to scratch.
 So only add a few fish at first or the waste will kill the fish before the bacteria gets to work.
 This was just to get the water temperatures equalised, and then over a period of a couple of minutes I let some of the tank water in the bag a couple of times.


Technically the fish waste is ammonia and needs to be broken down by bacteria into nitrite, and then later on into nitrate which is what helps the plants grow.
 Even then my advice would be to add fish slowly til the are all established.


My wife and I eventually decided that tanganyika cichlids and malawi cichlids were our real tropical fish hobby (with some dwarf Kribs thrown in) and we managed to breed a few different types including labidochromis caeruleus or more commonly Canary cichlids, and also neolamprologus leleupi or the tanganyika yellow.


In the evenings now we just switch the television off, cuddle up and watch the fish tank - and soothe our worries away.
